This is a wonderful project which we should all support. Marine Reserves for the Bay of Islands are long-overdue!

The cover photo for the Fish Forever launch of their proposal for 10% of the Bay of Islands to be protected is a lovely and unfortunately very rare photo. A good line-up of decent-sized packhorse crays. Obviously a deep water photo as the pink gorgonian fans are only seen out in the open like this in excess of 35 metres depth. Back in the early 1970’s I saw packies larger and more numerous than this in 10 metres of water in a similar crevice at Rimariki Island at Mimiwhangata. I believe packhorse (green) crays need a complete rest. Give them a TAC (Total Allowable Catch) of zero for 20 years and see what happens. Current marine reserves are too small to make a difference. Packhorse crays are no longer important as a commercial species because their numbers are so insignificant, but lets see if we can boost up their numbers and they could be important from a dive tourism point of view. They used to grow to about 40 pounds weight! Spectacular!
